No need to beat around the bush with this one: on the blue carpet for Avatar’s LA premiere earlier this evening, Bryan Singer offered up a tiny little detail about his follow-up to Jack the Giant Killer. He says he’s signed to return to the X-Men franchise, for the film that will now presumably be called X-Men Origins: First Class.

Flickchart mentioned Singer’s statement on Twitter, and it only took a few moments of combing through Ustream’s archive of the live blue carpet video feed to find the brief interview with Singer. What he says, exactly, when asked about his next project is:

I’m prepping up to do a movie called Jack the Giant Killer [at] Warner Brothers, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men First Class Origins picture, which is kind of cool.

Here’s the video:

This isn’t entirely a surprise, as Singer has talked about returning to the X-Men franchise as recently as this past October “I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast,” he said then. He’s also said he was considering directing First Class. Seems unlikely that he’ll get to work with Jackman much in this one, however, as the film is meant to cover the team of X-Men prior to Wolverine’s arrival in the first film.

Lauren Shuler Donner has said “the movie focuses on the first class at Xavier’s school of the gifted, so only those mutants will be featured in the first movie,” by which she evidently means that we’ll see the early days of the original X-Men team. In April of this year, she described it like so:

So it’s young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that’ll be really fun. I think (the plan) is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world. And hopefully First Class will become its own franchise and we can follow them as they grow up.

Bryan Singer To Reboot Battlestar Galactica?

Update by Editor Peter Sciretta: Entertainment Weekly has confirmed this report with Universal Pictures — Bryan Singer is signed on to direct a feature film version of Battlestar Galactica, which isn’t expected to be a continuation of the most recent Ron Moore Sci-Fi channel television show, but instead a complete re-imagining of the original 1970’s series. Original report follows below.

According to HitFix, Universal appear to be on the verge of engaging Bryan Singer to produce and also maybe direct a new Battlestar Galactica feature film. Quite a surprise, huh?

You may recall that before the Ron Moore TV series of recent years, Singer was working on a pilot for a reboot of the show himself (some Cylon concept art from their efforts is at the head of this post). That one was halted by in the aftermath of September 11th, 2001 after the Sci-Fi network became sensitive to similarities between the planned plot and real-life tragedy. Would Singer be looking to return to a similar storyline here? I think we can be pretty certain his film won’t be in any way tied into the recent series.

McWeeny is rather skeptical that Singer would sign up to direct a film based upon a premise still so fresh in the public consciousness, but I’m not so doubtful, personally. Would Universal really be the driving force here? I’d expect a conservative cautious studio to take some convincing that there was money here. Or maybe they just want some of that Star Trek dollar?

Is Bryan Singer’s “Logan’s Run” Remake Still Happening?

January 23, 2009 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

Logan's RunSlice Of Scifi has some news regarding Bryan Singer’s remake of Logan’s Run.  I loved the books, hated the movie, and, oh yes…there was a tv series too…

A couple of years ago, director Bryan Singer was ready to update the 70’s sci-fi film, “Logan’s Run.”

However, it appears the project has stalled a bit with Singer taking on variety of other projects.

So, will we see his version of “Run” any time soon?

“At the moment, I haven’t decided. I really don’t know,” Singer told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m taking a genuine break. The last four years have been really busy with the miniseries, the TV and the movies. I’m taking a few months to collect myself and figure out what I’m going to do in that regard. We did a lot of development on that movie and a lot of work. To start it up again, I wouldn’t start it up again without a full commitment. So I have decisions to make. Right now, that’s just hanging around.”

The Los Angeles Times followed up with producer Joel Silver, who was working on the project as well. Right now, there appears to be no hurry to get a remake of “Run” off the ground and up to speed.

So, it looks like you if want to see “Logan’s Run” you’ll have to dust off that DVD copy…
