AT&T Windows Phone 7 Handsets Out In November

October 1, 2010 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

Windows Phone 7 is really building up a head of steam, as AT&T and Microsoft are said to be planning a debut event for new handsets on October 11 in the US, to be followed by a retail launch in the week commencing November 8.

A trifecta of launch devices is on tap, says the Wall Street Journal, with one each from LG, Samsung and HTC, and AT&T is unsurprisingly fingered as the exclusive early carrier for WP7 goodness.

In exchange for that little favor, Microsoft will receive AT&T’s "marketing support" in pushing the message out about Windows Phone 7′s release. So long as nobody decides that home party packs are a good idea, we’ll be cool with whatever.

Sprint May Drop Unlimited Data If Usage Gets Crazy

September 23, 2010 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

So far, Sprint’s been steadfast in its commitment to keeping caps off its data plans — a big selling point since AT&T’s moved to tiered pricing and Verizon has threatened to do the same — but the laws of supply and demand sadly still exist, and Sprint CEO Dan Hesse knows it. In speaking at the Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT today, Hesse mentioned that his company "can offer unlimited as long as the usage is reasonable," suggesting that a glut of extremely heavy users (you probably know who you are) could ultimately mean he "can’t afford to do that anymore." Torrenting off a tethered EVO is fun, yes — especially when you’re on WiMAX — but just remember: it might ultimately come back to bite you.

Qualcomm To Release 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU In 2011

September 10, 2010 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

Mobile device chipmaker Qualcomm will launch a more powerful mobile processor in Q1 2011. The upcoming 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU will offer a 50% jump in processor speed over today’s 1GHz smartphone processors.

The new processor will provide high-quality multimedia performance with 3D graphics, HD video, built-in GPS and more. A 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon will also help Android regain an edge in the high-end against Apple’s iPhone 4, which is now on par or ahead of most Android devices with its custom-designed but single-core A4 chip. Watch the video after the jump to get more details.

Windows Phone 7 And The Accelerometer

September 9, 2010 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

"When Windows Phone 7 is released, users will be able to enjoy the fact that the hardware requirements for the phone include an accelerometer. Some applications are naturally inclined to work well with accelerometer input. Imagine a "Labyrinth" style game where you can now just rotate or tilt the device instead of simulating the tilting of the table using some buttons or sliders? Just rotating the device from portrait to landscape can re-flow the screen in the right orientation without the user selecting their preferred orientation."

Windows Phone 7 hardware requires an accelerometer, and I for one am interested in seeing what developers will do with that requirement. Over at The Windows Phone Developer Blog Dave Edson has written a fairly detailed post about the ways the accelerometer API can be used. The post includes code snippets that illustrate key aspects of the API. Now would also be a great time to get started developing an accelerometer-leveraging application – it appears Windows Phone 7 release day is just around the corner. Get coding!

Microsoft Kin Phones Discontinued

Microsoft Kin Phones Discontinued

The supposed ultimate social networking phone from Microsoft, the Kin, has been discontinued. Microsoft has officially announced that they won’t be producing any more Kin phones because of poor sales.

The Microsoft Kin phone is far too expensive for a phone that was designed to be used as a social networking phone and obviously aimed at the teenage market. However, Microsoft will continue to provide support for those who have already purchased the Kin phone. [Geeky Gadgets]
