Age Of Conan BoardgameFantasy Flight Games is proud to present, in conjunction with Nexus Games, Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game. Bringing to your gaming table the epic sweep of the Hyborian age, Age of Conan presents the battles and intrigues, quests and magic, of Robert E. Howard’s celebrated tales of Conan the Cimmerian.

In Age of Conan two to four players will take on the roles of the great kingdoms of Hyboria – Aquilonia, Stygia, Turan, and Hyperborea – and build through military might and cunning the most powerful empire the ancient world has ever seen!

Meanwhile, Conan the Cimmerian adventures through Hyboria on his own quests and the kingdom who ignores him, does so at its own peril. The kingdom which crowns Conan may harness his power, but the barbarian is unpredictable and savage, and failure will only unleash his wrath!

Brought to you by the design team of War of the Ring, Age of Conan is an epic-level strategy game featuring 170 plastic figures, 165 playing cards, 13 dice, and a large game board map of Hyborea, with rulebook and reference cards.

Talisman Revised 4th Edition Has Been Released

December 15, 2008 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

Talisman takes you on a journey through magical lands, as you endeavor to reclaim the Crown of Command. Each turn will see your hero advancing, battling, gaining knowledge and power necessary to defeat the guardians lurking between the Portal of Power and the Valley of Fire.

Fantasy Flight Games has sipped a new Talisman Revised 4th Edition, and if ever you’ve been interested in this franchise, then this edition of the title is very much worth your while.

A Fantasy Flight revision usually means high quality stock, high quality pieces, new rules, and ongoing support in an online community. But aside from the granted staples, this Revised Edition sports new decisions on how to improve upon Talisman’s mechanics to take the franchise to the next level.

For one, the designers wanted to keep the player count high (2-6) but decrease the time ti takes to play (under 2 hours). Considering we rarely have entire afternoons to lose ourselves in a marathon sessions of old school Talisman, this seems like a good thing to us.

They’ve also introduced new rules that help characters from dying so bloody often; the premier example being the new Fate mechanic. Each character has a pool of fate, each token giving them the ability to reroll one die result when it’s needed most dire. But fate is rare, and once it’s used the character will have to venture out of their way to get more, like spending a turn at a temple to pray for Fate instead of life, for instance.

Additionally there was a careful look at the major features surrounding the character factions, and they were rebalanced to make playing Evil characters a more viable option.

In a similar fashion, the game’s locations have gotten a mechanical face lift to ensure there’s always something to do for your character, no matter how remote the location he finds himself in the world.

Fate tokens are a new component and game mechanic. I’ll first explain the mechanic –how players use fate. For players who are curious about the development process, the last half of this article explains why fate was introduced in the Revised 4th Edition. Read more

Fantasy Flight Games Posts Rules for Age Of Conan – The Boardgame

December 3, 2008 by tcgames · Leave a Comment

Age Of Conan - The BoardgameIn anticipation of the Spring 2009 release of Nexus Games’ and Fantasy Flight Games’ new epic strategy board game, Age of Conan, we are presenting this brief sneak peak at Age of Conan, by Editor Sam Stewart. Those of you who attended Gen Con 2008 and got a chance to play the prototype of Age of Conan will remember Sam – he ran demoes the entire Gen Con weekend.

Age Of Conan – The Boardgame Rules

Age of Conan is, at heart, a game of military conflict. Phalanxes of armored soldiers square off against hordes of howling, axe-wielding barbarians, while swarms of horsemen pepper ensorcelled legions with clouds of arrows. While players can (and should) send their diplomats to convince or coerce the provinces of Hyboria into alliances, they should not do so at the expense of their armies. Though military conquest may prove more difficult than diplomatic intrigue, it will also provide a player with more long-term rewards. After all, this is the time of Conan the Barbarian, when only the strong survive to reap their rewards.

ConanConan is a major presence in this game (of course!), as he adventures through Western Hyboria. He can start minor uprisings and raise bands of brigands in provinces as scum and rabble-rousers flock to his presence. He may even join the armies of neutral provinces to fight against the invading armies of the players. Obviously, this means Conan’s influence can often upset a player’s carefully laid plans. However, there are ways for players to temporarily enlist Conan to aid them in their endeavors. A canny player will time his actions to take full advantage of Conan’s presence or absence. A player may even steer Conan in the direction of his opponents, so their schemes will be disrupted while he can proceed unimpeded. Read more

Age Of Conan: The Strategy Boardgame – Fantasy Flight Games

Age Of Conan: The Strategy Board GameMarco Signore over at BoardGameGeek.com has posted some information on the current status and an overview of Age Of Conan: The Strategy Board Game

During the 2008 edition of Lucca Games (Italy), I’ve been given the honour of being the offical demonstrator for Age of Conan boardgame (I will also post pictures of the event soon), in the Nexus stand. In four days of continuous play (from 9 a.m to 7 p.m.) I’ve played and taught to play enough games to gain a decent understanding of both rules and mechanics of this highly expected boardgame. I’ve talked at lenght with one of the authors (Roberto Di Meglio) and so I’ve decided to write this preview/review.
I will not focus on the rules, as many other reviews in this forum (from demo games) have already told you about “the rulebook”; I will instead attempt to offer a deep insight into what is the final “version” of the game, and its gameplay.
WARNING: Please note that some of the game terms will be different in the English Rules. This is because the Demo copy in Lucca was in Italian, therefore I have not been able to read the English rules.

Box content
Judging from the “final” demo copy of the game, the box will contain a rich hoard of materials that will enhance the gaming experience. The game, as most of you may have learned, is for 2, 3 or 4 players. Each player takes the role of one of the major Powers in Hyborea during the Age of Conan: Aquilonia, Turan, Stygia, and Hyperborea. In a 2-players game, only Aquilonia and Turan will play. The 3rd player will take Stygia, and Hyperborea is reserved for the 4th player.
Each Power has its uniquely sculpted Military units and Emissaries (Diplomatic units), while Fortresses and Towers are similar for all players (but of course different in colour). Furthermore, each Power has its own card deck, called Reign (or Realm) deck. Each power starts with 4 Military units, and 4 Emissaries.
Finally, each player takes 3 Gold counters. Aquilonia and Turan take one more Military unit, while Stygia and Hyperborea take 2 Sorcery counters each. Then each player draws two cards from his own Reign deck and two card from the Strategy deck, which is a “common” deck of cards that have several uses (see below). Read more
