Lucy Lawless Returns To TV With ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’
The beautiful singer/actress Lucy Lawless (”Xena: Warrior Princess”; “Battlestar Galactica”) will be returning to the small screen beginning January 2010 with a new series feature for the STARZ cable network titled “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”. The new series comes from Sam Raimi (Spiderman) and Rob Tapert (Drag Me To Hell); both are currently producing the new hit series “Legend of the Seeker”. Lawless worked with Tapert during her stint on Xena. Tapert will also be co-producing the remake of “The Evil Dead” along with Raimi.
“Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” which will get its early preview at the next big San Diego Comic Con, returns Lawless to familiar territory — the ancient days of gladiators and god-like heroes. The series centers on the title character Spartacus, played by Aussie actor Andy Whitfield. Lawless will play the wife of the owner of the now-enslaved Roman gladiator Spartacus.
The supporting cast for this adventurous undertaking includes some familiar faces from the sci-fi and fantasy genre. Erin Cummings of Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse,” Peter Mensah “300? and “Avatar” (Peter was interviewed here at Slice of SciFi), Te Maioha who worked on “Xena: Warrior Princess” and can currently be seen on “Legend of the Seeker,” Craig Parker from the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and also on “Legend of the Seeker,” and Manu Bennett who starred in the hit vampire flick “30 Days of Night.” The remaining cast include Nick E. Tarabay (”The Sopranos”), Viva Bianca (”Accidents Happen”), Jai Courtney (”Stone Bros.”) and Matt Gillanders (”30 Days of Night,” “King Kong”).

Angel of Death, a 10-episode Web series now shooting in Los Angeles, will be the first production on Crackle.com, Sony’s attempt to take the webisode concept to the next level, and SCI FI Wire was on set.
The original supernatural-tinged series has an all-star cast, including Grindhouse’s Zoe Bell, Battlestar Galactica’s Lucy Lawless, Hellboy’s Doug Jones and Spider-Man’s Ted Raimi. It’s directed by Paul Etheridge and written by comic icon Ed Brubaker. Each episode will run 8-10 minutes and will ultimately be cut together into a feature for DVD release.
Stuntwoman-turned-actress Bell plays Eve, a cold, calculating and unflappable assassin. Her world gets turned upside down when one of her jobs goes badly and she gets stabbed in the head. She survives, but soon finds herself with a newfound remorse for her past sins. Attempting to set her mind at ease, Bell hunts down the men who made her into the trained killer she has become, one by one.
Angel of Death is currently on location in Los Angeles, and SCI FI Wire was invited to the set Oct. 22 for an exclusive tour and chat with Bell and director Etheridge.
The day’s shoot took place at the Linda Vista Hospital in the Boyle Heights neighborhood outside of downtown L.A. The hospital was originally constructed in 1904 and ceased operation in 1990. It has served as an appropriately creepy location ever since, primarily catering to horror material. Even in daylight, the endless hallways and dark, dank appearance conjures discomfort. Add to that the smell of old age and the abuse of countless production crews. Read more
Xena Creators Would Love A Reunion
October 16, 2008 by tcgames · Leave a Comment
Rob Tapert, former producer of TV’s Xena: Warrior Princess, told SCI FI Wire that pretty much everyone involved in the old show would love to see Xena (Lucy Lawless) pick up her chakram once again for a TV movie or some other kind of reunion project.
Tapert said he even had an idea in mind, but that matters are entirely out of his hands.
“That’s a Universal question,” Tapert said in an interview, adding: “Meaning [NBC] Universal … Television [Group]. I don’t control the strings.”
Xena ran from 1995-2001 and starred Lawless–aka Mrs. Rob Tapert–as the title heroine and Renee O’Connor as her plucky sidekick, Gabrielle. The show was both a mainstream and a cult success during its time on the air, and to this day its stars and makers attend conventions worldwide.
Unfortunately, fans’ hopes for a reunion movie have yet to be realized. “We said long ago that we’d love to do something,” Tapert said. “We have a fun, 300-style idea for it. … I can’t answer [why nothing's happening].” (NBC Universal Television is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.)
